I thought it might be fun today to look at what people are typing into search engines, what terms they are using to try to find out just who God is, what scripture says, and who Jesus is?
What is love?
It would be so easy to go on and quote 1 Corinthians 13 vs 4 thru 13 and that would be, and is the REAL definition of love. I searched the internet and found various artists and narcissists that gave their version of what love is, some were good and others were pretty suspect. Top of the video results was the still the 2014 Haddaway video “what is love”.
The website www.goodtherapy.org says something like,
Mar 6, 2017 – Love is a complex set of emotions, behaviors, and beliefs associated with strong feelings of affection, protectiveness, warmth, and respect for another person. … For example, a person might say he or she loves his or her dog, loves freedom, or loves God.
Do you think that animals love?
Let me tell you a true story: Once upon a time a stray cat turned up at my place, just after one of the wild fires we have experienced over the last several years here in Norther California. I could see that the animal needed a drink, so I gave it some water, it was hesitant and would not approach the water till I backed off. Feeling a little sorry for the animal I offered it some of my lunch, and it just glowered at me and hissed at me, so I left the food on the ground and went about my business. The next day, the cat showed up again, and we went through the same routine, of me providing for it and it hissing and spitting at me. This arrangement went on for a week or so, and then I started speaking cat language to it by meowing softly to it as it hovered around waiting for food and drink, this went on for weeks, every time I saw the animal I would meow, and it would ignore me or just hiss and spit at me.
One day however, I pulled into my parking spot and I saw the cat approaching me, so I said my customary meow, and to my surprise it meowed back at me, and by that time it would warily come inside and eat from a dish, but if you went anywhere near it, it would hiss and growl at you, and the slightest quick move or noise from me would send it streaking out the door. Over the course of about 18 months this animal would come gingerly into the house to eat and we would greet each other with the customary meow, and if you left it alone it would sleep on an old coat I had put down for it. After about 20 months of this I decided that I would try to stroke the cat, so as I put the bowl down I gently put my hand out to stroke it’s back, immediately the animal tensed up, hissed and spat and tried to claw me as it made a quick escape out the door. This new arrangement went on for about 2 weeks until, as I put the bowl down, I could stroke it once or twice on the back, but it always flinched as if I were beating it or something, and all the while it would hiss at me for seemingly no reason. So we carried on this arrangement month after month, I would pull up in my car, we would exchange meows, then food was provided, and a begrudging stroke or two was had. Then one day somewhere around the two-year mark, I noticed the cat kind of affectionately rubbing up against the doorpost while waiting for me to put the food down, a few weeks later that translated into brushing up against my legs, all very gingerly at first, it would walk by with it’s tail sort of in the air but leaning off to one side so as just to touch my leg, and as the days went on it would brush harder against my trouser leg. Moving on to today the cat is a pest (a very nice pest) it won’t leave me alone, it’s always jumping up on the desk for attention, and demanding that I stroke it all the time, it rolls on it’s back inviting me to rub it’s tummy and purrs, and nuzzles me. It is a total transformation that I would never have believed possible one year ago. So, could that be love?
All I know is, I treated that cat with kindness, not expecting anything in return, sometimes, when it would hiss and spit I might think you ungrateful lil cuss, but that never stopped me feeding it or caring for it, and one day it finally learned to trust that I meant it no harm, and I guess it came to crave the love, kindness and affection that it had never previously known.
As the good book says, Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek it’s own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
Love is not a feeling, it’s an act of your will.
What is the Bible?
The bible is God’s word to man, it is one of the ways that God speaks to us today. Lots of people say that the bible has been changed through the years, so it’s not reliable. That is very far from the truth, also one thing to remember is that, If God is indeed God, He will have exactly what He wants in it’s text, and mere man could not change it. If that were the case, then God would be no God at all.
The Bible is the same now as it was 2000 years ago
Many people think that the Bible has been translated “so many times”
that it has become corrupted through constant translatings. If the bible was being translated from other translations, then it could become corrupt. In fact the translations are actually made directly from original
Greek, Hebrew or Aramaic source texts based on thousands of ancient
The accuracy of the bible was confirmed in 1947 when
archaeologists found “The Dead Sea Scrolls” which are ancient Jewish religious manuscripts found in the Qumran Caves in the Judaean Desert, near Ein Feshkha on the northern shore of the Dead Sea. The Scrolls contain Old Testament scripture dating 1,000 years older than any other manuscripts we have today. When modern bible books like Isiah were compared with the texts from 1,000 years earlier, we find agreement 99.5% of the time. And the .5% differences are minor spelling variances and sentence structure that doesn’t change the meaning of the sentence. The New Testament is the worlds most reliable ancient document ever found. Few people doubt Plato’s writing of “The Republic.” written by Plato around 380 B.C. The earliest copies are
dated 900 A.D., That means that there is a space of about 1300 years between him writing it and the copies that we now have. There are only seven copies in existence. The same with Caesar’s “Gallic Wars” it was written around 100-44 B.C. But he copies we have today are dated 1,000 years after he first wrote it, and we only have ten copies. Both these writings had massive gaps between when they were first written and the oldest manuscripts we have, yet no doubts their veracity.
The New Testament, written between 50-100 A. D, and we have more than 5,000 copies. All are within 50-225 years of the original writings. Further more, the writers (usually monks) were meticulous in their copying of original manuscripts. They checked and rechecked their work, to make sure it was word for word what the original New Testament writers had written. It is preserved better than any other ancient manuscript on earth. Because of this fact, we can be absolutely certain that what we read about Jesus’ life and words, are far more certain than the writings of Caesar, Plato, Aristotle and Homer.
Who is Jesus?
According to Wikipedia, Jesus was a first century Jewish preacher and religious leader. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed historically. But, Jesus Christ of Nazareth is far more than just some ancient forgotten preacher. He is the most unique character in all history, so much so that even our dates are split between BC = before Christ and AD = Anno Domini which means, in the year of the Lord.
Jesus did and said so many things that were simply amazing, He predicted the future, He knew peoples thoughts, He shut the mouth of religious leaders, on and on are the marvelous things He did. I wrote a short series called, questions that deserve an answer, that briefly goes into this stuff, and asks questions about some amazing things Jesus did.
What is the Church?
It’s a big building, with stained-glass windows and a steeple right? Actually the first use of the word church is found in the new testament in Matthew 16:13-20 After Jesus asks His disciples who they said He was, and Simon Peter said “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Then Jesus goes on to say, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
Church is not a building, but rather those called out of the world into Christ’s bosom, IE believers in Jesus. What is missing from these letters, CH CH? That’s right UR. That my friends is what the church is, it is the people, that carry Christ’s death and resurrection.
2 Corinthians 4:10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
Even so, come Lord Jesus, come.
Till next time.
