Proverbs according to Andy

I love reading Proverbs, and I like to amuse myself making up my own proverbs too 🙂

Proverbs

Proverbs 1:1-2

The proverbs of Soloman the son of David, King of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive words of understanding. Wow, what a boast, to know wisdom and instruction and to perceive words of understanding.

What is wisdom? is it something that one learns along the way? Sure, if I put my hand in the fire and I get burnt, then wisdom would, or at least should direct me not to do it again, that is just plain common sense, but is it wisdom?

Is wisdom something one can practice? I believe it is, but many of us do not practice it, and maybe it could be said of those who do not practice wisdom, that their sole purpose in life may be simply to serve as a warning to others 🙂

Wisdom could be not testing the depth of the water with both feet, or, learning from the mistakes of others, after all you can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.

Then we come to instruction, Instruction can and usually is highly ambiguous, like the deodorant I purchased the other day, the instructions read “remove cap and push up bottom” hmm, probably not a good idea 🙂 or the instructions on my microwave meal, “stir and recover” just how exhausting do they think stirring pasta is?

But there is instruction to live by, and to find that we have to go to the maker, who luckily for us does not make mistakes and His instruction is perfect and perfectly understandable, yet most of us just aren’t listening.

The instruction of wisdom

Proverbs 1: 3-4 to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice and judgment, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

Wisdom is always equated with justice, judgment and equity, at least true justice is. Man’s interpretation is however badly flawed, there is no justice in the halls of power, because all the people that are in power are megalomaniacs of one sort or another, they’re just in it for themselves, they may have started out with good intentions, but having to navigate their way thru the mire has changed then, made then cynical or worse, greedy, corrupt, selfish. Picking a supreme court justice for instance, is just like crossing a river, it all comes down to Roe vs Wade, nobody considers the baby’s rights, it’s disgusting and God will hold all those murderers accountable. An unborn child was charged with a crime it did not commit and sentenced to death, now that you can argue is a miscarriage of justice.

A wise man will hear

Proverbs 1: 5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise council.

Maybe someone should have told the man with one chopstick that he would go hungry, or the man who eats too many prunes would get a good run for his money. Who can claim to be wise?

All the worlds’ wisdom is as nothing in the face of God, yes, man has made many inventions and gadgets but he cannot recreate what God has already made, can a man make a planet, or a sun, or a universe? Yet, a truly wise man will hear wisdom from the very source that created him, now that is true wisdom. A wise man will hear and increase in learning, wise men also know that it is foolish to ignore God, look at Jonah for example, where on earth (literally) did he think he could go to run away from God? He who knows everything about us and only desires good for us, just patiently waits for those who are listening to obey and live, not ignore and suffer but he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in whatever he does. James1:25

The fear of the Lord

Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

A wise man can learn more from a foolish question than a fool can learn from a wise answer … Bruce Lee

Note that the fear of the Lord is just the beginning of knowledge or wisdom, but a wise man will keep going back for more rather than just lay back and stop pursuing wisdom, learning, knowledge, and instruction. Jesus said

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls, doesn’t that sound so good, so comforting, to find rest for your soul, after all there ain’t no high like the most high, Amen

To sum it up

God has given us all that we need to not only survive, but to thrive, the book of Proverbs I believe is indeed instruction in righteousness and right living and right-thinking, the saved hear it and are glad, but fools deny it and suffer the consequences. This world is at war with someone that cannot be defeated, so for me and my money, I bet on loving Jesus who first loved me.

If you’ve never heard this before, then you are in for a real treat.

Yeah, that’s my King.
